Ensuring students are college- and career-ready are the key aims of Don Bosco Cristo Rey. Partnering with over a hundred companies, from law firms to hospitals to universities, its innovative Corporate Work Study Program enables low-income, at-risk students to take on the responsibility of a professional, entry-level job. Four-person "job sharing" teams cover one full-time position, and an intensive three-week summer program ensures that team members are ready to balance office work and homework – learning small skills like shaking hands while maintaining eye contact and large ones like time management. Students also gain the empowering experience of earning 60% of their own tuition. Last year, 94% received good or outstanding assessments from their employers and everyone was on track to graduate – uniquely prepared both for college and for the work world beyond. COVID-19 Update: DBCS has successfully transitioned to a virtual school model, but with its job sponsor losses, has focused instead on providing students with professional development opportunities. It has provided tech resources such as laptops and hot spots to students as well as offering resources such as food and rent assistance to students' families.
