Around Town: January 8-9

And we’re back! 2011 already is yielding plenty of cool weekend happenings at our non-profits. Read on to find one (or many) events in your community:

First, congratulations to Class 16 on their graduation from Operation Understanding DC this weekend! For a great performance, written and directed by OUDC’s young leaders, about their year-long journey to find their voice and passion, head to Temple Shalom in Chevy Chase on Saturday at 7:00. Email info@oudc.org to learn more.

Looking for … a Night at the Theater?

The hysterical meets the historical in Encore Stage & Studio’s musical Night at the Wax Museum; you can get your tickets right here. Musicals abound, as you also can catch the In Series’ English adaptations of I Pagliacci and the iconic Cuban musical Maria la O at the Source Theatre on 14th Street NW this weekend. A Girl’s Guide to Washington Politics at Woolly Mammoth is sold out, but you might be able to nab a “Stampede Seat” if you arrive two hours before show time. And for a metaphysical (and comic) celebration of vanity, stop by the District of Columbia Arts Center on Saturday night for Acheivement! (spelled incorrectly on purpose).

Or are you looking to perform? You can sign up to audition for the Washington Revels Freedom Singers, an up-and-coming group committed to preserving African American history through music, dance, and drama.

Looking for … an Afternoon of Art or Dance?

Free of charge, you can stop by the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop’s gallery until 2:00 on Saturday; this Saturday at 5:00 PM, you also can attend the grand opening of their Fifth Annual Photography Exhibition and Reception. As part of their Words that Move Us Series, Dance Place will welcome the Artistic Director of HBO’s Brave New Voices series, who will perform text and choreography from his solo works.

Looking to … Explore the Outdoors?

From 10:00 to noon on Sunday, Potomac Conservancy needs volunteers of all ages at their monthly clean-up; meet at the River Center at Lockhouse 8 to beautify the land and water surrounding Lock 8, and along miles 8 and 9 of the C&O Canal towpath.

Have a great weekend!
