Rising for Justice provides free, high-quality legal and social work services to low-income DC residents facing housing instability and other civil legal challenges. Each year, its clinical programs bring law and social work students from area schools together with experienced advocates to represent clients, receive hands-on training, and offer trauma-informed, wraparound support. Students and attorneys conduct intake, provide client consultations, and participate in emergency hearings, representing tenants while connecting them with rental assistance and housing counseling. Staff attorneys partner with hundreds of additional pro bono attorneys to remove the criminal records that create barriers to many residents’ long-term financial stability. Serving more than 250,000 residents since its founding, Rising for Justice’s community-embedded approach ensures everyone can access resources and legal representation when their housing, employment, and economic security are at risk.
