Volunteer Fairfax (at Reston Town Center Pavilion, 11900 Market Street, Reston, VA)

Join Volunteer Fairfax and local emergency preparedness professionals on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM for “Ready Reston!,” a fun, family-friendly opportunity to learn what needs to be done to prepare for emergencies, large and small.

DCAC (2438 18th Street NW)

Loose Ends, the final exhibition of the current members of Sparkplug, DCAC’ artists collective, opens this Friday at 7:00 PM. Through video, photography, painting and sculpture these artists study themes of shifting frames, deconstruction of systems, and neo-romanticism. Plus, DADA Returns continues this weekend and the Capital City Showcase is coming up on Saturday.

Smith Center for Healing and the Arts (One-day retreat)

The DC Jazz Festival starts now! Head to 6th & I Synagogue, The Hamilton, Howard Theatre, The Phillips Collection, The Kennedy Center, and Bohemian Caverns for incredible live music; full schedule right here. And on Sunday at 3:00 PM, the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras presents the “Grand Finale” concert, opening with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis; learn more this way.

NATURE…

On Saturday, celebrate National Trails Day with Potomac Conservancy from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM: restore the towpath and trails, prune back vegetation, and clean up the River Center area (and enjoy live music!). You can also celebrate with Rock Creek Conservancy, which will offer everything from Beginner Bird Walks to Trail Maintenance to an Historic Garden Trails Tour; check it out! A Meaningful Mother’s Day

For twenty-five at-risk DC teen mothers, Mother’s Day 2012 was not only their first as new parents or parents-to-be. It was also especially meaningful.

On Monday, May 14, Healthy Babies Project paid tribute to these young women with a special Mother’s Day Dinner Celebration. It was a fitting way to honor one of HBP’s principal constituencies — teen moms enrolled in HBP’s cornerstone Teen Parent Empowerment Program (TPEP) — and the steps these disadvantaged young parents are taking to turn their lives around.

At HBP’s inception in 1991, the District of Columbia had among the highest infant mortality and infant illness rates in the nation — rates on par with some Third World countries. Today, those rates have been cut in half, thanks in large part to HBP. The agency works to reverse this needless cycle of poverty, illness, and despair by equipping at-risk DC families to have healthy babies. Case management, health education, and life skills training are keys to the agency’s success. HBP’s infant mortality rate is nearly two-thirds lower than the District’s; HBP client low birth weight rate is half that of other delivering mothers in DC.

Last night, at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater, The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts presented a unique new work, My Soul Look Back and Wonder: Life Stories from Women in Recovery — a production of its acclaimed Life Stories program. After the performance, R. Gil Kerlikowske, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, took part in a panel discussion about the play and the critical issues of substance abuse and homelessness.

According to the Theatre Lab, “The program began in early February on-site at the N Street Village facility, a recovery center for homeless and low-income women. Theatre Lab instructor Thomas Workman led a group of ten women in recovery for substance abuse through acting, storytelling, and drama therapy exercises. Participants shared details of their personal lives, including family issues, struggles with drugs, and homelessness. The stories were then crafted into theatre piece by Helen Hayes Award-winning playwright Jennifer L. Nelson. The women — none of whom are professionally trained actors — performed the play themselves under the direction of Theatre Lab founder and co-executive director Deb Gottesman.”
