Atlas INTERSECTIONS – Opening Day

Seed Cleaning at Arlington Village

We will clean the seeds of native grass and forb species that we collected from local parks, every Saturday in January and February. (Except for February 15th) Our seed cleaning sessions during the winter months are a collaborative effort between the Earth Sangha and Arlington Regional Master Naturalist Group, but we will accept a limited number of students who study environmental science or biology/botany. The only reason for limiting the number of participants is entirely due to the space constraint, but the Arlington Village’s Meeting Room is quite large, and we hope to accommodate a larger group.

Chopin, the Storyteller

Explore Chopin’s compelling works for the piano with Brian Ganz, who returns by popular demand with his fourth Chopin recital in his journey to perform all of the composer’s works. This concert features Chopin’s masterpiece of narrative and emotional power, the Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52; the Mazurka in A minor, Op. 17, No. 4, one of his most soulful and mysterious works; the epic Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48, No. 1; the tender and storied Waltz in A-flat Major, Op. 69, No. 1 (“L’Adieu”); as well as the highly dramatic Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op. 45. Ganz has been a prizewinner in the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium and the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud (Paris) International Piano Competitions. Please wear long clothes and work boots as the work may be muddy and there are plenty of thorny plants present. Tools and gloves will be provided, but your own work gloves and hand-clippers are useful tools to bring. This event will be led by the president of VNPS Potowmack Chapter, Alan Ford.

Our Daily Bread
Our popular Empty Bowls dinner gathering is always a heart-warming and family-friendly evening of great art, music, food and friendship — our largest fundraiser of the year. Your ticket includes selecting a one-of-a-kind soup bowl to take home, handcrafted by a local artist or community member. Hundreds of beautiful bowls to select from! Then join your neighbors in a simple meal of soup and bread as a symbolic reminder of those in our community who go hungry. All proceeds benefit local families facing financial crises – whose bowls and pantries are empty – so that they may be filled. Funds go directly to ODB’s programs to help our neighbors in need achieve financial stability.

Winter 2014 New Volunteer Training

Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless
The core of the Legal Clinic’s work is the representation of individual low- and no-income clients through a network of over 250 volunteer attorneys and legal assistants. Volunteers obtain clients at one of six intake sites run by WLCH at meal programs, health clinics, and day programs throughout the District. Our intake sessions last for one hour and, on average, about 3-5 clients attend each intake. If clients present legal issues that meet our case selection guidelines, then the intake volunteer acts as the primary legal representative for those clients. WLCH staff attorneys provide advice and guidance on all volunteer cases. Attendance at our training is required for all new volunteers. Attorneys must be authorized to practice law in the District of Columbia: attorneys must be a current member of the D.C. Bar or have begun the process for waiving in admission; attorneys employed by the Federal Government must be a member in good standing in the highest court of any state. Paralegals may volunteer only in partnership with and under the direct supervision of an attorney authorized to practice in D.C.

God’s Country: One Woman Show

District of Columbia Arts Center (DCAC)
Michelle Antoinette Nelson, also known as LOVE the poet, is a poet, actor, musician, host and prominent indie artist/author on the national performance and literary art scenes, and in the field of creative writing education. She has appeared on CNN as a speaker at the Jena 6 rally in Washington, D.C., authored the book “Black Marks on White Paper”, is the recipient of the 2011 Baker b-grant award, released multiple spoken word CDs, and has performed at the Smithsonian & college campuses nationwide. Michelle is also a Punany Poet (as seen on HBO), the playwright and star of “God’s Country” her touring one woman play, the creator of Live Lyrics! Creative writing workshops, and the founder/host of BE FREE Fridays (monthly open mic series).

These informative celebratory meetings are held for Jubilee Jobs clients who have found employment through our program and for those considering enrollment in our Move-Up career advancement program. Many of the people we have placed in jobs are or have been homeless and poor and appreciate the dinner and companionship. Canal Stewards at the River Center

Join us at the River Center! We’ll be meeting at 10 am at the River Center to clean up the lockhouse area and the nearby towpath. This cleanup is open to all ages, and we’ll provide all the necessary supplies – just wear clothes that can get dirty. This event is part of the National Park Service’s Canal Stewards program, engaging volunteers to become long-term caretakers of a site within the C & O Canal National Historical Park.

Festive Music of the Americas Concert

DC Youth Orchestra Program
DC Youth Orchestra Program’s Youth Orchestra and Junior Orchestra will perform festive music of the Americas in the beautiful Hall of States at the Organization of American States’ Main Building. On the third Wednesday of each month, Jubilee Jobs hosts an event called Job Friends. These informative celebratory meetings are held for Jubilee Jobs clients who have found employment through our program and for those considering enrollment in our Move-Up career advancement program. We would love to have volunteers serve a prepared holiday meal to our clients. Many of the people we have placed in jobs are or have been homeless and poor and appreciate the dinner and companionship. Job Friends clients now hope that gaining employment will help change their circumstances and we are there to support them and walk with them every step of the way. We hope you will join us.

FLOC Book Festival

For Love of Children
The Book Festival is an opportunity for FLOC students and their families to celebrate the importance of reading and literacy. At last year’s event, more than 80 students and family members enjoyed a story from Master of Ceremonies Cynn Simpson of WJLA-TV and local author Laura Murray read her book The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School. Students participated in the presentations and at the conclusion of the event took home 20 books to start their own personal libraries. According to a 2007 study by the NCES, 4th graders who reported having 25 books or more at home had higher scores on reading tests than children who reported they didn’t have that many books. This year FLOC is hoping to engage our corporate partners and local businesses to support this event by hosting workplace book drives.

DC Law Students in Court and Justice Aid Benefit Concert

On November 20, 2013, JusticeAid honors the non-profit DC Law Students in Court for its 45 years of training law students from area schools to represent the disenfranchised in the nation’s capital. LSIC prevents homelessness by keeping families in safe and affordable housing while also striving to end the school-to-prison pipeline and reduce the mass-incarceration of the poor. RTMC Playhouse Project Builders Informational Meeting

Rebuilding Together Montgomery County
RTMC is preparing to launch Rebuilding Hope: The RTMC Playhouse Project, a fundraiser in which we recruit skilled professionals to create and donate elaborate playhouses to RTMC, which will be displayed and promoted, and then auctioned off to support our mission of safe and healthy homes for families in need. This meeting is a recruiting exercise for builders, remodelers, architects, designers, and other skilled professionals who have an interest in creating a playhouse for our event. We will introduce Rebuilding Together, go over last year’s successes and lessons learned, and introduce the plan, timeline, and logistics for this year’s event, as well as answer any questions. RTMC staff, the Playhouse Planning Committee, and builders from the previous event will be on hand to answer questions and provide perspective. Canal Stewards at the River Center

Join us at the River Center! We’ll be meeting at 10 am at the River Center to clean up the lockhouse area and the nearby towpath. This cleanup is open to all ages, and we’ll provide all the necessary supplies – just wear clothes that can get dirty. This event is part of the National Park Service’s Canal-Stewards program, engaging volunteers to become long-term caretakers of a site within the C & O Canal National Historical Park.

2nd Annual World of Wheels for CASA: Family Festival and Touch-a-truck

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)/Prince George’s County
CASA’s 2nd annual World of Wheels for CASA: A Touch-A-Truck and Family Festival will take place Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at DeMatha Catholic High School (4313 Madison St., Hyattsville, Md. 20781). This community event will feature cars, trucks of all sizes, motorcycles and other unique vehicles, including: a 1958 refurbished Mac tractor, a Brink’s Security armored vehicle, a Maryland Army National Guard Humvee, a Maryland State Highway Administration flusher truck and TurboHaul bulk trash truck. Batman, himself, will appear with the Batmobile from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the Maryland National Capitol Park Police Prince George’s County Mounted Division will be on hand throughout the day. Adding to the excitement will be food, music and an assortment of activities for “kids of all ages,” including moon bounces, carnival games, craft tables, face painting, temporary tattoos and shopping at vendor display tables–new this year. Attendees also can learn about volunteer opportunities with CASA to provide a voice to abused and neglected children in Prince George’s County.

Lost Childhood: A Concert Opera

The year is 1939 in Lvov, Poland. In the living room of a well-to-do Jewish family, Julek, 9, and his teenage sister dance the tango to music from the radio. Their father enters and turns to the BBC broadcast to hear news of impending war. Fast-forward to 1993, an elegant bar in a Manhattan hotel, where Judah, a psychiatrist (formerly the child Julek), sits across from his German colleague, Manfred, born after the war to a prominent family of Nazi sympathizers. In a gripping confrontation between a post-war German and a Jewish Holocaust survivor, each deeply troubled by his own lost childhood, the past comes alive in the present. Through a series of flashbacks, Manfred, tormented, faces his family’s dark past, while Judah reveals for the first time, with bravado and humor, anger and grief, how he, his mother and sister outwitted the Third Reich. With searing emotion and heartwarming lyricism, the music recollects the terrors of the Holocaust and inspires a hopeful vision of the future. Judah is based on Yehuda Nir, a psychiatrist and the author of the memoir The Lost Childhood. The inspiration for Manfred is Nir’s friend Gottfried Wagner, a great-grandson of Richard Wagner and a specialist in post-Holocaust dialogue between victims, perpetrators and their descendants. This performance marks the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht (“The Night of Broken Glass”), on November 9-10, 1938, when a series of violent anti-Jewish pogroms occurred throughout Germany and elsewhere.

Native Species Planting: Marie Butler Leven Preserve

Earth Sangha
We will be sowing native grass seed, and planting grasses and other meadow species into the front meadow section at Marie Butler Leven Preserve. The Park Authority has cleared away the invasive fescue and prepared the ground for the planting. Sidharth Madhavan from Boy Scout Troop 1518 will be leading the volunteers as part of his Eagle Scout Project. This section of the meadow will establish important native species that are integral to meadow communities and will give us a foothold to re-establish a native meadow on this site.
